The Ride with MoMo initiative will run for an initial three months before being reviewed for a possible extension, according to Abdul Razak Issaka Ali, Chief Commercial Operations Officer at MobileMoney Fintech Limited (MoMo).

‎Speaking on the sidelines of the launch, Mr Issaka Ali said the programme was designed to encourage commercial drivers across Ghana to adopt MoMo merchant services, making digital payments more convenient and cost-effective for both transport operators and passengers.

‎‎”We are running this for three months, after which we will do a review and then see if we need to extend or bring it to an end,” he said.

‎He explained that the initiative targets all categories of commercial transport operators, including ride-hailing drivers on platforms such as Yango, Uber and Bolt, as well as taxi, trotro and tricycle (Pragya) drivers.

‎According to him, the objective is to help drivers embrace merchant payment solutions that simplify business operations while allowing them to benefit from lower transaction charges designed specifically for businesses.

‎”We are trying to bring the merchant solution and the ease of doing business into that space to encourage drivers, who are businesses themselves, to adopt merchant services so they can enjoy the benefits the platform offers,” he said.

‎‎Addressing concerns over Mobile Money transaction costs, Mr Issaka Ali acknowledged that operating digital payment systems comes with expenses but stressed that merchant wallets attract lower charges than personal wallets.

‎He noted that many drivers currently receive payments through their personal MoMo wallets, a practice the initiative seeks to change by encouraging migration to merchant accounts, which offer more favourable transaction rates for business users.

‎He urged interested drivers to register for the service by visiting any MTN office or designated MoMo ambassador with a Ghana Card. Applicants with business registration certificates are encouraged to present them during registration.

‎”The service is free. The SIM will be given to you free of charge, at no charge,” he emphasised.

‎Mr Issaka Ali also appealed to commuters to embrace digital payments, saying they eliminate the common inconvenience of drivers and passengers searching for change after a journey.

‎‎He observed that Mobile Money has already become a trusted means of storing value and making payments for many Ghanaians, adding that the Ride with MoMo initiative extends that convenience to everyday transport services.

‎‎On concerns about rising Mobile Money fraud, Mr Issaka Ali assured customers that security remains a top priority for MobileMoney Fintech Limited.

‎‎He said the company continues to invest heavily in fraud prevention, customer education and collaboration with law enforcement agencies to combat fraudulent activities.

‎‎”For MoMo, it is all about trust. Fraud is always at the core of everything that we do. The fraudsters are getting smarter, but we are also getting smarter,” he said.

‎‎He added that continuous public education on emerging fraud tactics, coupled with prompt reporting and investigations, would help protect customers while ensuring offenders are brought to justice.
