President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Samuel Nartey George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, as the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations.
This nomination is part of the President’s third batch of ministerial appointments submitted to Parliament for approval.
Sam George, a prominent figure within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been serving as the MP for Ningo-Prampram since 2016.
Prior to his parliamentary role, he worked at the Communications Directorate at the Presidency during President Mahama’s previous tenure. His experience in both legislative functions and executive communications positions him well to lead the newly structured ministry.
The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations is a restructured entity under the Civil Service (Ministries) Instrument, 2025 (E.I. 1), signed on January 9, 2025.
This restructuring reflects the government’s priorities in digital transformation and technological advancement.
The ministry is tasked with:
- Digital Infrastructure Development: Expanding and enhancing Ghana’s digital infrastructure to support economic growth.
- Policy Formulation: Developing policies that foster innovation and regulate the digital space effectively.
- Digital Inclusion: Ensuring equitable access to digital technologies across all regions.
- Cybersecurity: Implementing measures to protect national digital assets and personal data.
Sam George’s appointment comes at a time when Ghana is focusing on leveraging technology for development. His prior experience in communications and his active role in legislative matters related to technology and digital rights suggest a proactive approach to his new responsibilities.
The nomination is part of President Mahama’s broader strategy to assemble a team capable of addressing the nation’s challenges, including economic recovery and job creation, within 14 days of his inauguration as part of his social contract with Ghanaians.
Parliament’s Appointments Committee will vet Sam George and other nominees to assess their suitability for the designated roles.
Upon approval, Sam George will be instrumental in driving policies that align with the government’s digital transformation agenda.
This appointment underscores the administration’s commitment to integrating experienced individuals into roles that are pivotal for national development, particularly in the rapidly evolving digital sector.
