Tesla Inc is set to unveil its long-delayed Roadster sports car in Texas on Thursday, using a high-profile flight demonstration to revive interest in its automotive business amid two consecutive years of annual sales declines.
The event, scheduled for a SpaceX rocket testing facility near Waco, will showcase a prototype featuring technology designed to briefly lift the vehicle off the ground.
The demonstration comes as the electric vehicle manufacturer faces pressure to reinvigorate its core automotive business, which continues to generate the vast majority of its revenue and operating profits, despite Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk’s growing focus on artificial intelligence and autonomous robotics.
The flying vehicle concept is unlikely to become commercially viable in the near term because of regulatory hurdles, safety concerns and prohibitive manufacturing costs. Instead, the demonstration is expected to serve as a marketing exercise to reinforce Tesla’s reputation for innovation and redirect attention towards its consumer vehicle range.
The new Roadster will expand Tesla’s relatively narrow vehicle portfolio, which relies largely on the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover. The company’s other offerings include the Cybertruck, which contributes modest sales volumes, while the commercial Semi and the unreleased Cybercab represent additional products in its lineup.
First announced in 2017, the second-generation Roadster has faced years of production delays and repeated changes to its expected timeline.
Its revival also brings renewed attention to the nameplate that marked Tesla’s entry into the automotive industry in 2008, when the original Roadster helped establish the company’s identity.
However, the success of Thursday’s demonstration will ultimately depend on whether it generates sustained consumer interest and translates into stronger demand for Tesla’s vehicles.
Investors will be watching closely to determine whether the event can restore momentum in the automotive division or reinforce concerns about the company’s reliance on high-profile promotional initiatives amid continuing operational challenges.
