Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, was visibly overwhelmed with grief as he paid tribute to the eight victims of the tragic military helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region.
The heart-wrenching moment occurred at the forecourt of Jubilee House during a solemn wreath-laying ceremony held in honor of the departed statesmen and military officers who perished in the national tragedy.
The victims of the crash include the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna; Vice Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Sarpong; Deputy NADMO Director-General, Samuel Aboagye; and three Ghana Air Force personnel—Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Tsum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo.
Before laying his own wreath, Hon. Sam George accompanied the First Lady, Her Excellency Lordina Mahama, to lay her wreath as she also uncontrollably. He was then joined by his deputy to pay their respect to the departed, after which he broke down in tears and had to be assisted to stay on his feet.
Tears had started streaming down his face while he paying his respect to the departed souls. He managed to keep his composure through that brief ceremony where the flowers were presented to him and he laid them down. But on his way back from the spot where he laid the flowers, he lost control and started weeping inconsolably.
The scene quickly turned somber as his deputy, directors from his ministry, aides and security personnel gently escorted him away, visibly shaken.
The emotional display highlighted the personal connections and bonds shared among members of government and the military with the departed—many of whom were close friends and longtime colleagues of the minister.
Sam George had earlier made a social media post indicating what strong and brotherly bond he shared with the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah in particular. He mentioned how Dr. Boamah had shepherded him through his political life and also contributed to the education of his children.
This moving moment adds to the series of powerful, emotional moments witnessed at the Jubilee House since the start of the national mourning period declared by President John Dramani Mahama.
The president has meanwhile, assured Ghanaians of a full, transparent investigation into the crash and has called for unity as the nation mourns its fallen heroes.
A state funeral is scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Black Star Square. Memorial events are ongoing, including flower-laying ceremonies, public reflections, and books of condolence opened at several government institutions.
