Canal+ is strengthening its streaming-first strategy by making DStv Stream readily available on Samsung smart televisions across Africa, underscoring the group’s growing focus on connected TV viewing over traditional satellite services.
From 1 June, the DStv Stream application will come pre-installed on all new Samsung smart TVs sold in 18 English- and Portuguese-speaking African countries, including South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Angola, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The move marks the first time a MultiChoice streaming platform has been preloaded on Samsung televisions in these markets. Canal+ said the initiative builds on its existing partnership with Samsung, which already covers more than 40 markets across Europe, French-speaking Africa and Asia.
With the app appearing on Samsung’s home screen alongside major streaming platforms such as Netflix and YouTube, customers will be able to access DStv Stream immediately without the need for additional downloads. The service offers extensive sports coverage, including the FIFA World Cup 2026, the English Premier League, and local and international rugby, in addition to a broad entertainment catalogue.
The development follows Canal+’s acquisition of MultiChoice and forms part of a wider effort to streamline its digital operations. The group recently discontinued Showmax and integrated its content offering into DStv Stream, creating a single destination for streaming content.
By securing a place directly on one of Africa’s most popular smart TV platforms, Canal+ is positioning DStv Stream to capture audiences increasingly turning away from satellite decoders in favour of internet-based viewing.
According to David Mignot, Chief Executive Officer of Canal+ Africa and MultiChoice Group, the expansion strengthens the long-standing relationship between the two companies and aligns with the group’s ambition to make its content more accessible on connected devices.
The initiative highlights the changing nature of television consumption across the continent, where the future of DStv is becoming as dependent on streaming applications and smart TVs as it once was on satellite dishes and decoders.
