Ghana has achieved a significant milestone in its petroleum industry with the delivery of locally produced Jubilee crude oil to the Sentuo Oil Refinery, a development expected to strengthen the country’s energy security and promote greater value addition within the domestic economy.
The landmark delivery reflects the Government’s commitment to processing more of Ghana’s natural resources locally, reducing dependence on imported refined petroleum products while retaining a greater share of the economic benefits generated from the country’s oil resources.
The achievement aligns with the vision of President John Dramani Mahama to deepen local participation and accelerate industrial development within the petroleum sector.
It also builds on the successful supply of Ghanaian crude oil to a domestic refinery in 2016, underscoring continued efforts to integrate upstream oil production with local refining capacity.
Officials say the move represents another important step towards creating a more resilient and self-sustaining energy sector capable of supporting national economic growth and industrialisation.
Sentuo Oil Refinery has emerged as a key player in Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry, contributing to efforts aimed at enhancing domestic refining capacity. The development comes at a time when the Tema Oil Refinery is also actively refining crude oil following the receipt of one million barrels of crude, further boosting the country’s ability to meet local fuel demand.
Industry observers believe the simultaneous operation of the two refineries will help reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported fuel products, improve energy security and create additional opportunities for employment and industrial expansion.
The successful delivery of Jubilee crude to Sentuo Oil Refinery highlights the strong collaboration between government, industry stakeholders and petroleum partners in advancing Ghana’s energy and industrial transformation agenda.
Authorities have described the development as a major step towards maximising the value of Ghana’s petroleum resources while supporting broader national objectives of economic diversification, industrial growth and sustainable development.
