Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has directed the immediate deployment of 10 medical doctors and 30 nurses and midwives to the Weija-Gbawe Children’s Specialist Hospital to strengthen its workforce and support the expansion of services.
The Minister gave the directive during an unannounced visit to the facility, where he expressed satisfaction with the commencement of operations and assessed the hospital’s readiness to provide quality healthcare.
Mr Akandoh also urged health professionals to keep compassion, dignity and respect at the centre of patient care, stressing that technological advancement could not replace the human connection in healthcare.
“AI has come to ease the work we do, but AI will never have compassion for human beings. That is our strength. If we lose that, there will not be any difference between us and AI,” he said.
He said while Artificial Intelligence (AI) could help reduce the workload of health professionals, compassion remained a key responsibility that could only be provided by human beings.

The Minister further directed the management and staff of the hospital to maintain the facility and its equipment to the required standards.
He welcomed the hospital’s accreditation under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and assured management of the Ministry’s continued support in addressing outstanding challenges to ensure quality care for patients.
The Acting Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Nana Okine Brago, said the facility had a capacity of about 120 beds and commenced operations on August 17, 2026.
He said the hospital operates as a secondary-level referral centre, adding that preparations were underway to introduce inpatient services following the deployment of additional health personnel.
The visit forms part of the Ministry of Health’s efforts to assess health facilities, identify operational challenges and ensure that public health infrastructure is fully utilised to improve access to quality healthcare and patient outcomes.
