Multichoice, operators of pay tv service DSTv and GOTv have flatly denied referring to the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi as a fluke, saying that the stance of the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George on the matter of subscription fees in Ghana is “regrettable”.
This is contained in a statement issued by Multichoice on Sunday in response to a recent warning by the Minister for them to reduce subscription fees in Ghana by August 7, 2025 or risk losing their license.
The Minister followed up on his warning with a Facebook post where he presented a table indicating DSTv subscription fees in seven Africa countries and Ghana has the highest prices for almost all the packages DSTv offers.
According to the Minister, after he had told Multichoice to take steps to reduce their price by July 21, the company wrote a 9-page letter to him saying the depreciation of the cedi over the last eight years is reason why their prices in Ghana are high, and that the recent appreciation of the cedi is a “fluke”.
But Multichoice, in their statement, signed by the Managing Director, Alex Okyere denied describing the appreciation of the cedi as a fluke, adding that the minister’s stance is “regrettable”.
The company said the subscription fees cannot be reduced in the manner the minister is asking, adding that they have proposed alternative further engagement with the National Communications Authority and are ready to work with the Minister to find a lasting solution to the matter.
The statement noted that the implication of the company’s shutdown in Ghana could be dire for customers, staff, contract works, agents and many more so they are willing to work with government and reach an amicable solution.
“MultiChoice values its subscribers and endeavours at all times to keep DStv subscription fees as low as possible, despite the extremely challenging competitive and macro-economic environment in which we operate, without compromising on customer choice and the quality of the services we offer,” the statement said.
