The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intercepted a 40-foot trailer carrying five million tablets of Tapentadol 250mg in a major anti-drug operation.

The consignment, which was heading towards Niger, was seized following a carefully coordinated, intelligence-led exercise, in what authorities describe as one of the largest pharmaceutical drug interceptions in recent times.

Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the shipment and are currently in custody, assisting with investigations. The suspects are believed to be part of a wider trafficking network involved in the cross-border movement of controlled substances.

Tapentadol, a powerful opioid analgesic, is strictly regulated due to its high addictive potential and the risk of abuse and dependency.

The drug is commonly misused for its opioid effects, which can lead to serious health complications, including addiction and long-term harm.

NACOC has reiterated its commitment to intensifying surveillance and enforcement operations to combat the trafficking of dangerous drugs within and across Ghana’s borders.

The Commission added that it is working closely with international partners to trace the origin of the consignment and identify its intended distribution networks.

“NACOC is working to dismantle the network behind the consignment”, the Commission said.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to clamp down on organised drug trafficking and safeguard public health.
