Tema Port advances green shipping agenda with just-in-time sailing initiative

A three-day workshop has been held at the MPS Terminal 3 at Tema Port, marking a significant milestone in the implementation of the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) GreenVoyage2050 Just-In-Time (JIT) Sailing Project in Ghana.

‎The workshop brought together key stakeholders from across the maritime sector to advance the adoption of the JIT Sailing initiative, which is designed to improve port efficiency while reducing the environmental impact of shipping operations.

‎Unlike long-term solutions that depend on the widespread availability of alternative green fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia, the JIT Sailing concept offers an immediate operational approach to lowering emissions.

By improving coordination between ports and vessels, the initiative enables ships to arrive only when berths are available, reducing unnecessary waiting times at sea, cutting fuel consumption, lowering operational costs and decreasing carbon emissions.

‎The project aligns closely with the Government of Ghana’s vision of developing Tema Port into a strategic 24-hour economy hub, where efficient and seamless port operations are expected to drive trade, investment and economic growth.

‎‎The Ghana Maritime Authority said the success of the initiative will depend on strong collaboration among key industry players. These include the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Meridian Port Services (MPS), the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Immigration Service and major shipping lines operating at the port.

‎Through enhanced coordination and information sharing, the partners are expected to strengthen the implementation of the JIT programme, improve vessel turnaround times, reduce operational costs and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s broader emissions reduction strategy.

‎The GreenVoyage2050 Just-In-Time Sailing Project forms part of the IMO’s global efforts to support developing countries in decarbonising the maritime sector while improving the efficiency and sustainability of port operations.
