The National Identification Authority (NIA), in partnership with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), will resume the Ghana Card registration exercise for children aged 6 to 14 in the Volta and Oti regions from Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

‎‎In a statement on its Facebook page, the NIA said “The exercise forms part of a nationwide effort to register approximately 3.1 million children, aimed at deepening inclusion and strengthening Ghana’s national identity system from an early age.”

According to the statement, the Volta and Oti regions exercise marks the beginning of a phased rollout across the country, with each phase expected to run for at least 21 days to ensure comprehensive coverage.”

‎‎‎To facilitate the extensive capture of eligible youngsters, the registration team will travel across both public and private schools for nine hours every day.

The statement said that eligible children who do not attend school may go to any of the schools or designated centres and register.

‎‎With regards to documents required for registration, the statement said parents/guardians must present either the child’s original birth certificate, a current Ghanaian passport, or a Certificate of Acquired Citizenship, adding that where those documents are not available, parents/guardians must fill an Oath of Identity form.

For children whose parents or family are not known, two social welfare officers will be required to testify under oath on their behalf before they can be registered.

The statement said parents of eligible children registered for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) will also be required to present the children’s NHIS card or number, adding that the parents/guardians themselves must be Ghanaian and must have valid Ghana Cards.

NIA warned that providing false information or facilitating the registration of a non-Ghanaian is an offence punishable by law.
