The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has announced the suspension of parliamentary sittings to facilitate preparations for the 4th African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family and Sovereignty, which will be hosted in Ghana from June 3 to June 6, 2026.

‎‎Addressing the media, Speaker Bagbin said Parliament remained the most suitable venue for the continental gathering, which is expected to attract Speakers of Parliament, Members of Parliament, policymakers, academics, civil society leaders and development partners from across Africa and beyond.

‎According to the Speaker, more than 30 countries have already confirmed their participation, highlighting the growing importance of the conference as a platform for strengthening collaboration among African nations and reinforcing the role of legislatures in preserving societal values and promoting national sovereignty.

‎He assured delegates and stakeholders that Ghana was fully prepared to host the event, noting that extensive arrangements had been made in the areas of accommodation, security, media coverage and other logistical and technical support services.

‎The conference will be held under the theme, “Consolidating Parliamentary Consensus: Advancing the African Charter on Family Values and Sovereignty.” It is expected to provide a forum for discussions on emerging social, cultural and governance challenges facing African societies, while promoting stronger policy and regulatory frameworks across the continent.

‎‎Speaker Bagbin described the conference as particularly timely, citing growing social pressures and increasing xenophobic tendencies in some parts of Africa. He expressed optimism that deliberations would culminate in significant resolutions and declarations aimed at safeguarding African values, strengthening continental unity and advancing people-centred development.

‎‎He further called on Ghanaians to support and actively participate in what he described as a historic event for the continent.

‎‎The conference will also be attended by the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, who is expected to serve as the Special Guest of Honour.

‎‎The four-day event is anticipated to deepen parliamentary cooperation among African countries and contribute to ongoing efforts to promote shared values, cultural identity and sustainable development across the continent.
