The United States government has lifted export controls on Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial intelligence models, allowing the AI developer to restore public access to the systems from Wednesday.

‎‎Anthropic announced the decision in a post on social media, confirming that access to the advanced AI models would be reinstated following the easing of restrictions. The announcement came after Politico reported on Tuesday that Washington was close to removing the export controls imposed on the models.

‎‎The company had abruptly suspended public access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 earlier in June after receiving an order from the White House directing it to block foreign nationals from using the AI systems.

‎The restrictions marked a significant setback for the rollout of the models, which Anthropic had already delayed for an extended period because of concerns that they could be misused to develop sophisticated cyberattack capabilities and other critical cybersecurity exploits.

‎Signs of a policy shift emerged last week when Anthropic disclosed that the U.S. government had authorised the release of Mythos 5 to a limited number of trusted American organisations. The move was widely viewed as an indication that Washington was reconsidering its earlier restrictions.

‎Before their wider launch, Anthropic consulted several major U.S. organisations and financial institutions regarding the deployment of the Fable and Mythos models. The company eventually made the models publicly available in early June before access was curtailed by the government order.

‎The latest decision to lift the export controls is expected to restore broader availability of the advanced AI systems, signalling a change in the U.S. government’s approach to regulating access to cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies.
