Ghana is intensifying efforts to position itself as a leader in the ethical and inclusive use of artificial intelligence (AI), as key stakeholders convened in Accra for the Artificial Intelligence Readiness Assessment Methodology (AI-RAM) programme.
Speaking at the event held at the Best Western Premier Hotel near the Kotoka International Airport, the Secretary-General of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, Prof. Osman Tahidu Damba, underscored the urgency for countries to prepare for the responsible adoption of AI technologies.
Prof. Damba stressed that as AI continues to transform global systems, countries must prioritise ethical considerations in its deployment.
“Every country is preparing to see how ethically AI can be used without compromising cultural and institutional values,” he noted.
He highlighted Ghana’s proactive role in shaping frameworks that ensure AI supports governance, strengthens institutions, and addresses developmental challenges.
According to Prof. Damba, AI presents a unique opportunity for developing countries like Ghana to bridge long-standing development gaps, particularly in governance and service delivery.
He emphasised that ongoing efforts are geared towards equipping stakeholders with the tools and knowledge required to harness AI effectively and responsibly.
The UNESCO official commended the ministry responsible for ICT for its continued efforts in expanding access to technology and addressing rural-urban disparities in digital infrastructure.
He noted that improving access to information remains central to Ghana’s broader development agenda and AI readiness strategy.
Prof. Damba reaffirmed the Ghana Commission for UNESCO’s commitment to supporting initiatives that will enhance the country’s standing in the global AI ecosystem.
“We will continue to facilitate processes that will position Ghana as a key player in UNESCO’s mandate of ensuring access to information and building a strong AI-ready nation,” he said.
The AI-RAM programme forms part of broader international efforts to assess and strengthen countries’ preparedness for AI adoption, ensuring that emerging technologies are deployed in ways that are inclusive, ethical, and beneficial to society.
The Accra gathering brought together policymakers, experts, and development partners, marking a significant step in Ghana’s journey toward becoming a competitive and responsible player in the global AI landscape.
