Bank of Ghana has directed Mobile Money Fintech Limited (MMFL) to suspend the implementation of its proposed 0.75 per cent fee on direct wallet-to-bank transfers pending further consultations with stakeholders.

‎This comes less than 24 hours after the announcement of the proposed charge, which was due to take effect on 1 June 2026. The announcement triggered enormous public outcry over its potential impact on consumers and the broader mobile financial services ecosystem.

‎In a statement issued on Tuesday, the central bank said the decision formed part of its commitment to ensuring that any adjustments to charges within the mobile money sector are introduced in a fair and transparent manner.

‎“The Bank of Ghana informs the public that Mobile Money Fintech Limited (MMFL) has been directed to pause the implementation of its proposed 0.75 per cent fee on direct wallet-to-bank transfers,” the statement said.

‎‎According to the regulator, the suspension will allow for further engagement and consultation before any final decision is taken on the proposed fee structure.

‎It noted that protecting consumers and supporting their financial wellbeing remained a key priority as digital financial services continue to expand across the country.

‎The proposed charge had generated public debate in recent days, with some industry observers and customers raising concerns about the possible effect on financial inclusion and the cost of digital transactions.

‎MMFL had announced plans to introduce the fee on wallet-to-bank transfers through its platform from the beginning of June. However, the latest directive means the fee will not be implemented until consultations are concluded and further guidance is issued by the central bank.
