The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), in collaboration with the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), has launched an official Organic Certification Logo as part of efforts to establish a national Organic Certification Scheme aimed at strengthening Ghana’s organic agriculture sector.
The launch, held in Accra, brought together key stakeholders in the organic produce value chain, including farmers, agribusinesses, policymakers, development partners and certification experts.
The event provided a platform for participants to discuss challenges facing the sector and contribute ideas towards improving the certification framework.
The Organic Certification Scheme forms part of broader efforts by the GSA to position Ghanaian organic products competitively on the international market. The initiative is expected to enable local farmers and agribusinesses to access premium export markets and take advantage of the growing global demand for organically produced goods.
Speaking at the launch, officials underscored the importance of certification in enhancing consumer confidence, ensuring product authenticity and promoting adherence to internationally recognised organic production standards.
A key feature of the scheme is the introduction of the official Organic Certification Logo, which will serve as a mark of quality and authenticity for products that have successfully met the required standards and have been approved for public use. The logo is expected to help consumers easily identify certified organic products while strengthening trust in Ghana’s organic produce.
Stakeholders at the event welcomed the initiative, noting that a credible certification system would not only improve market access but also encourage sustainable agricultural practices, enhance environmental protection and create new economic opportunities for producers.
The GSA and GIZ reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with industry players and other partners to ensure the successful implementation of the Organic Certification Scheme and the continued growth of Ghana’s organic agriculture sector.
The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the country’s agricultural transformation agenda while supporting efforts to increase exports and improve the livelihoods of farmers engaged in organic production.
