Meta Platforms’ upcoming artificial intelligence model has reached the level of the industry’s leading systems, according to the company’s superintelligence chief, Alexandr Wang.
Speaking during a company town hall, Wang said Meta’s next-generation AI model, codenamed Watermelon, has caught up with OpenAI’s flagship GPT-5.5 model, Business Insider reported on Friday, citing two people familiar with the meeting.
It was not immediately clear which benchmarks or performance metrics Wang was referring to when making the comparison.
The remarks come as Meta intensifies efforts to narrow the gap with rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic, following years of heavy investment in AI infrastructure, including advanced chips, data centres and top engineering talent.
Despite those investments, Meta has generally trailed its competitors in the race to develop cutting-edge AI models. The company released its Muse Spark model in April, which performed strongly across several benchmarks but was still widely viewed as falling short of the capabilities demonstrated by competing systems.
Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has made artificial intelligence a central strategic priority, taking a hands-on role in overseeing the company’s AI development.
As part of that effort, he recruited Alexandr Wang last year to lead Meta’s AI division as the company seeks to accelerate progress towards more advanced AI systems.
Wang’s comments suggest Meta believes its latest model represents a significant step forward in closing the performance gap with the industry’s frontrunners, although independent verification of the claimed capabilities has yet to emerge.
