Ghana Water Limited (GWL) says the recent interruptions in water supply in parts of Accra East and Tema is because of erratic power supply at its Kpong Water Treatment Plant and associated bolster stations as well as operational difficulties due to aquatic weeds clogging its water intake screens.
“The primary cause of the current disruptions is the ongoing instability in power supply to the Kpong Water Treatment Plant and associated booster stations,” the company said in a statement.
It explained that the Kpong Plant supplies a significant portion of potable water to both the Tema and Accra East Regions, and therefore serves a large section of the eastern part of Accra and adjoining communities.
The plant therefore requires reliable energy supply to power the pumps and drive the treatment and distribution networks.
It emphasised that any change in the power supply, therefore, directly impacts its capacity to supply water to customers.
Aquatic Weeds
The company also noted that the growth of aquatic weeds at the Kpong plant’s intake site has put additional burden on its operations.
It said the recent heavy rains in the Akosombo area have made matters worse by increasing the amount of weeds and clogging intake screens, which limits the abstraction of raw water for treatment.
According to GWL, its technical teams are currently working nonstop to clean up and stabilize the facility’s operations.
Regarding the restoration of regular power supply to the plant, the company said it is collaborating wit the Volta River Authority (VRA), Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to deal with that.
It apologized to customers for the inconvenience and appealed for patience while they work on restoring regular water supply to the affected areas.
